Swedish made the bold decision to pursue development of a free-standing emergency clinic in Issaquah, Wash., and to better position itself for the industry-specific “Certificate of Need” process and, ultimately, rights to develop the Eastside’s first comprehensive in-patient facility in decades. The primary challenge for Swedish was to engender trust and acceptance among the area’s government officials and to dispel the notion that Overlake was the “open-and-shut” choice for developing new facilities on the Eastside.

Solution

Frause was brought on to execute a strategic approach to building awareness and support among the mayor, planning department, and other key decision-makers at the City of Issaquah. Frause leveraged its extensive relationships in Issaquah’s public sector to arrange informal, one-on-one meetings between Swedish’s development team and the mayor, planning department head and others. In addition, Frause executed a full-scale publicity campaign that highlighted for consumers Swedish’s facilities development plans and reinforced its messages delivered directly to the City.

Outcomes/Results

Swedish Medical Center – Issaquah received full approval by the planning department and city council, and grand-opened in July 2011. In addition, due to the significant media exposure created during this campaign, Swedish Medical Center’s free-standing clinic has experienced better than anticipated business and continues to serve satisfied Eastside consumers through a wide range of on-site healthcare services.
