ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & TOURISM
Vancouver USA Regional Tourism Office
Media Relations

Although the city of Vancouver, Washington, is the oldest and the fourth largest city in the state, it is not top-of-mind as a tourist destination, either regionally or nationally. It is overshadowed by popular destinations in the Puget Sound region to the north and by Portland, its neighbor to the south. Additionally, negative perceptions often persist among those who have not visited Vancouver in the past 10 years, based on the city’s then-deteriorating downtown core. Since that time, Vancouver and nearby communities have greatly changed and offer visitors and tourists a wide range of attractions and experiences.

Solution

Frause developed a comprehensive and strategic media relations plan aimed at building top-of-mind awareness and changing negative perceptions about the city and the region. The goals of the plan were: • Bring about economic development through attracting visitors and tourists to Vancouver and Clark County • Put heads in the beds of local hotels • Influence visitor spending To accomplish these goals, an aggressive media relations campaign was, and continues to be, implemented and aimed at print and electronic media read and viewed by such target audiences as: • Meeting planners • Businesses and associations • Group tour operators • Leisure travelers
